Parthian Glance

Christopher Marlowe,

Many people are looking for a reason to explain why some people, almost all young men, decide to kill a lot of people. If the cause was playing violence-theme games then we should be seeing tens of thousands of mass killings. Since we do not, these forms of entertainment are not likely sufficient conditions.

Their brains work differently than the vast, vast majority of the rest of us. So how do we spot such brains?

These guys are essentially playing tag in costumes. Being a group activity it probably doesn't suit the sort of 'loners' often associated with mass shootings.

I was first a bit unsettled by this next clip ...

~The deal goes bad and all war breaks out using our new fake blood

On reflection, while these kid are using toys that may look too much like real weapons, they are still playing the same sort of games hundreds of thousands of kids have played for decades. How many of such kids have gone on to be mass shooters or violent criminals?

Actually, rewatching it now and I still feel unnerved. *g*

Lostinamerica,

The few times I've actually checked how people died by firearms over a given period1 around half the deaths were suicide. A certain number are accidents, almost always because the person(s) did not follow safety rules.

The rest were either criminal homicides or justifiable homicide. From my experience, criminal homicides fall into one of four categories:

1. The shooting was a by-product of the crime, such as a robber who shot someone who would not cooperate or got in the way.

2. Premeditated murder, i.e. killing the person was necessary to achieve the shooter's goal.

3. Heat of rage, i.e. an angry person struck out with what was handy, in these cases a gun.2

4. Gang turf wars.

You don't often see assault weapons being used in the first two and only in the heat of rage if it's an assault weapon that is handy.3 Gangs will use whatever is available and convenient for the situation.

Neither the Columbine murderers or the Virgina Tech murderer used "assault style" weapons. It maybe significant that the Aurora and Sandy Hook murderers did, though in the latter case he used weapons his mother owned. OTOH, the Aurora murderer went to effort to equip himself with close-quarter combat gear. Since he seems never to have been in the miliary, where did he get his ideas about what that sort of gear? Very likely video games, movies, television and the internet. OTOH, there are tens of thousands of people who play paintball or airsoft games in which they dress up in combat gear and in the case of airsoft use simulated firearms that are very, very close in appearance to real ones. These folks do not go amok.

There's also the whole tribe of Cowboy Action Shooters who dress up in western gear and compete in shooting competitions using revolvers, shotguns and rifles. A large percentage of these people are women. Don't know of any of them who have gone berserk.

With respect to justifiable homicide, many argue it happens so infrequently that such cases cannot offset the other shooting deaths. What is missed in this reasoning is that most self-defense by firearm ends with the presentation of the weapon. The bad guy(s) see the weapon and stop what they were doing and leave. No shots are fired, no one is killed and thus the count of justifiable homicide is kept down. The point of using a firearm for self-defense is to make the bad person stop their attack. Many bad guys turn around and leave upon seeing that their intended victim is armed.

Two final quick notes -

1. There are gun manufacturers who offer guns in pink.

2. An odd observation - With one exception, all the assassinations and attempted assassinations of US presidents or presidential candidates the shooter used a handgun. The exception was the assassination of JFK. There was an attempted assassination of President Truman by, I believe, Puerto Rican nationalists, but I do not know what weapon(s) they used.

Your question, ...Are you sad today, wolfguard--aren't you in Atlanta? gave me a minutes' pause. What would I be sad about? And then it hit me, did Atlanta's football team lose? I don't watch football. *g*

1 I've seen counts by week, month and year.

2 There are premeditated 'heat of rage' killings, such as the person who gets fired and comes back to get revenge. OTOH, they usually are targeting a specific individual(s).

3 According to the Wikipedia article on the Newtown / Sandy Hook shootings, one girl survived in one of the classrooms by playing dead. She said the man who shot them was ~ very angry. I do not know if she was inferring this from his action or describing her memory of the incident, I suspect the latter.

lostinamerica: I don't think anyone requires training for a gun purchase, just the federal background check, and you've got to have enough money, haha. And to carry your analogy further, people (especially guys) receive training in their families or in the Service so REQUIRING training would be like requiring Mario Andretti to take Driver's Ed. And, need I say it, you have a right to a gun, but driving is a privilege. You ARE, however, required to take 12 hours of training in Michigan and go through the State's own background checks to get a concealed-carry permit. Here FYI is an idea of what courses and pricing are offered at my firing range of choice. Notice they have ladies night (no pink guns, J/K, but they DO offer a discounted price.)

wolfguard, ChristopherMarlowe--With Ray-Ray's impending retirement stories about the old murder charges have resurfaced: Lewis Controversy. After reading the timeline you have to wonder--did he get away with murder?

See, I tied in violence with football--except not gun violence, because a knife was used in the slayings ;)

Back to gun violence--Slate's U.S. gun death total is up to 1,099 since Newtown: Gun Death Tally. I sure hope somebody in charge is looking at this and has decided to look into the reasons behind these murders--1,099 lives lost seems insane!

ccChristopherMarlowe

ChristopherMarlowe, wolfguard--It doesn't seem fair to me too to lump in accidental and drunk driving deaths with gun deaths--I'm pretty sure those people weren't meaning to kill anyone or themselves but through their own negligence or bad luck ended up doing just that.

One thing I would like to know--when you buy a gun, are you required to take some kind of safety course or training? To get a drivers' license you need to pass a written and driving test to get on the road, it seems like you should do at least that much if you're going to own a weapon. I know if I ever bought one I would, because if I was buying a gun to protect me or my family I would have no qualms about using it and would want to be ready.

As for football--I can't believe that the Hawks, after letting the Seahawks back in the game last week, did the very same thing against the 49ers. Somebody needs to tell them that a game last four quarters, not just two ;)

Are you sad today, wolfguard--aren't you in Atlanta?

I'm also very surprised that New England lost--I guess the Ravens just wanted it more. Now, when Ray-Ray is gone, will they be as motivated as they have been with him on the team--he's a one-man cheering squad :)

wolfguard I liked that first cartoon. I'm not sure where the cartoons got his statistics. It indicates 18 mass shootings, it doesn't seem to count people shot in mass shootings, just the number of incidents.

I don't usually like the use of accidents or DUI statistics as comparisons to gun deaths unless the someone uses the automobile to deliberately run people down. That seems false equivalency to me.

The other comparisons (blunt instrument, knives etc) are more reasonable comparisons.

Seized inside the school were the following: a Bushmaster .223 caliber-- model XM15-E2S rifle with high capacity 30 round clips; a Glock 10 mm handgun; and a Sig-Sauer P226 9mm handgun...

valMichael: I thought you might say "Haunted in the haunches"

lostinamerica: I don't think anyone requires training for a gun purchase, just the federal background check, and you've got to have enough money, haha.

Now, when Ray-Ray is gone, will they be as motivated as they have been with him on the team--he's a one-man cheering squad :)

valMichael1: My crowning achievement in Computer Programming: I wrote two programs (in Pascal, I believe) that would convert a Prefix (Polish) mathematical expression to an Infix conventional mathematical presentation [or it may have been vice versa--I can't remember] (one program strictly used subroutines {for any similar processings} and one totally operated without subroutines.) As I remember it WAS to illustrate stacks versus queues and I got extra credit for it.) Methinks I saved it somewhere but have been unable to find it for the longest time. It WAS a thing of beauty, however.

Learned something this morning. Yesterday I used a Hastings gift card to buy a book called "Weather." It's in the Eyewitness Companions series published by DK Publishing. It begins with a history of weather beginning with how weather and climate affected, and were perceived by people, in ancient times and includes the fact that Kublai Kahn twice [ETA: It actually says "a number of times." These specific times were 1274 and 1281.] tried to invade Japan and was stopped both times by typhoons. (Learned that last night. Also that these typhoons were called 'kamikaze', 'divine wind'.)

What I just learned involves the atmospheric layers:

troposphere -- lowest layer, temperature decreases with altitude to about -112°F at the top

Stratosphere -- temperature stays uniform or increases with altitude

mesosphere -- temperature decreases with height. Temperature can drop to about -130°F.

Thermosphere -- temperature increases with height. Temperature can be raised to 27,000°F.

Exosphere -- Highest layer, dwindles to nothing at upper edge.

I knew there were atmospheric layers but did not know that temperature falls, rises, falls, rises with height. And I certainly had no idea the temperature could reach 27,000 degrees.

Morning light spills over the crater rim, a warning wail sounds from the mound that was the Mall. Night creatures scurry to shadows and caves. A freak light ray passes through a cracked pane creating a small rainbow through which a butterfly flitters. With a nervous system too small for reflection, it notices not, and follows its habits across the fractured forum and into a building and down a hall where it lands upon a small, smooth boulder. It rest a moment, wings vertical as is the way of butterflies, then tiptoes over the boulder and slips through the eye socket to home.
))

KAM You once said "The Wheel" had the best hashbrowns in all the land, but sadly no longer make them. Do you know how they were prepared, from raw potatoe to the plate or some part thereof?

Maverick Polish and reverse Polish by definition have no order of operations in the notation. The notation is stack oriented, and each operation removes the previous 2 data points from the stack and replaces it with the result, which in turn is a new data element on the stack.

Given a list of data A, B, C, D and operations OP1, OP2, OP3,
To do the calculation: [{(D OP1 C) OP2 B} OP3 A],

Polish notation would use A, B, C, D, OP1, OP2, OP3 for the above calculation where the stack is A, B, C, D from bottom to top.

Reverse Polish notation uses OP3, OP2, OP1, D, C, B, A for the same calculation where the stack is D, C, B, A from top to bottom.

Using Polish notation for an example, (not Reverse Polish)
consider the calculation A, B, C, D, OP1, OP2, OP3,
It works as follows:
apply C, D, OP1 as [C, OP1, D] which removes C and D from the stack and puts R1 on the stack yielding
A, B, R1, OP2, OP3 for the remaining part of the calculation.
Repeating the same with A, B, R1, OP2, OP3 yields A, R2,OP3.
Apply the final operation A, R2, OP3 which yields R3, the final result.

Reverse Polish just reverses the order of the data and the operations, as above.

Care must be taken so the the correct order of data is entered for the operations required, especially for division and subtraction.

Unary operations like negate, square, square-root, etc. are allowed and operation on the top of the stack and replace it with the result of the operation.

HP calculators use the Reverse Polish notation and it is highly efficient one once gets used to it.

Thoin I used no numbers in this, just pure symbols that are not numbers or even operations like plus or minus. In fact, Polish notation was developed for formal Logic (a sub-branch of Philosophy) and is currently used for that purpose in some papers and journals. In first order sentential logic, A, B, C, D are sentences and OP1 OP2 OP3 are their logical connectives: And, Or, If ... Then ..., If and Only If, Not, etc.

Thoin first, congratulations on the new job, a writing job no less!

I wonder, if instead of the symbols +.-,*,and /, i had used the words plus, minus, divides and multiplies leaving only one small example equation, would that have helped?

valMichael gets out his trusty Swiss micro-(knife, cosmo-wrench, spanning screw and nut driver)-adjustor and with the addition of some quickly created hyper-electronic modules, modifies the old style adding machine to output data electronically into the cable that's fitted into valMichael's brain, eliminating all that messy paper and creating a feeling of total euphoria in valMichael's magnificent brain! "Ah," says valMichael, "much better. Thanks Thoin. This is almost as good as eyeteeth where I see what I say." :)

Christopher Marlowe,

The scoobies' decision was wrapped in uncertainties, which they may not have even have fully appreciated. We know Willow believed Buffy was probably/certainly in a demon dimension.

A friend sent me the following story. It's about Senator Harry Reid so I will spoiler font the story proper.

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family tree.

(( She discovered that Senator Harry Reid's great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor. The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows in Montana territory:

On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.' So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.
))

Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

(("Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."))

wolfguard Yes. Buffy still has trouble adjusting and the scoobies wind up being terrorizes or possessed by some demon that hitched a ride on Buffy when they resurrected her. I found that part of of it to be very scary and effective.

I felt for Buffy in that she felt she was in a good place and find she has to face a hard life all over again. I also sympathizes with the scoobies, who are desperately trying to convince themselves they did the right thing.

[dd][div class="p93"]Learned something this morning. Also that these typhoons were called 'kamikaze', 'divine wind'.)[br][br]What I just learned involves the atmospheric layers:[br][br]troposphere -- lowest layer, temperature decreases with altitude to about -112°F at the top[br][br]Stratosphere -- temperature stays uniform or increases with altitude[br][br]mesosphere -- temperature decreases with height. Temperature can drop to about -130°F.[br][br]Thermosphere -- temperature increases with height. Temperature can be raised to 27,000°F.[br][br]Exosphere -- Highest layer, dwindles to nothing at upper edge.[br][br][br]I knew there were atmospheric layers but did not know that temperature falls, rises, falls, rises with height. And I certainly had no idea the temperature could reach 27,000 degrees.[/div][br][br][/dd] says:
